I'm not totally qualified to answer, but the best thing may be to look at the examples linked on the DragonFly SoC projects page about this and see how much sense they make. Also, #dragonflybsd on EFNet (IRC) may have answers for you. The student application period has started; writing out an application may be the best way to focus on the issue. Make sure to plan out the schedule in as detailed a fashion as possible!
