Are you using 'options APIC_IO' in your SMP kernel config? I don't say this is the problem itself but having it enabled may produce a number of issues in certain hardware. Also, in case that's not the issue, can you please boot verbose and tell us exactly the point where it hangs? If you could provide the whole dmesg text better, that's better.
