This was to support, I figured, machines like the Power PC where the I/O
ports can be memory mapped. So their model makes both x86s and Power PCs
work the same way with I/O ports. I'm sure this would extend further with
other machines, but this is all I'm familiar with.
I'm /totally/ for copying their memory model. Its the most extensive and
inclusive approach to a memory model that I've ever seen. But, I'm also for
not being sued by IBM...
