My exact problem is this: I have two stupid browsers. They refuse to
download any file that has no extension. I click on a link they do nothing,
nothing at all, not even an error message. With "unknown" extensions, I
usually get a dialog box prompting me to save the file. I don't believe it
is a problem with the website or link.
If stage1 and stage2 were added to an archive, such as stage1and2.tgz or
stage1and2.zip, I could download it and extract these files.

I hadn't thought of it before. A JOS program can do this, can't it? It
might be time to role my own download-to-disk program. While a JOS program
might help me here and now, am I going to be the only one with a stupid
browser?
Can we automate the process of creating a JOS boot disk? It is feasible to
write a JOS program that creates a JOS boot disk. You can choose between
GRUB and Etherboot. For Etherboot, you can choose your network interface
card from a Choice component. In fact, we can write this so that it
downloads the latest Etherboot NIC files or downloads the stage1 and stage2
files from the www.jos.org server.
Step 1. Insert a blank diskette.
Step 2. Run the JOS Boot Disk program.
Step 3. Choose GRUB or Etherboot.
Step 4. If Etherboot, choose your network interface card.
Step 5. Press the Run button.
Result: The JOS Boot Disk program creates a boot disk.
Since the JOS Boot Disk program would be a platform-independent, you can
create a JOS Boot Disk from both Linux and Windows (and eventually JOS).
