Intel has released a virtual machine as open source. Their stated goal for
releasing an open source virtual machine is pure research.

Does Intel see the need for a Java-based operating system? They should.
They'd like all operating systems running on the Intel microprocessor.
Intel knows what it would take to create a Java-based operating system. It
needs virtual memory management and garbage collection. Would you like to
see virtual machine optimized for their microprocessor? I would. That would
solve our stated goal of memory conservation.
