Thanks to everyone who replied. I managed to get it working. It turned out in the end that I was building it right, but the test / "reproducer" I have is very sensitive to exactly how it is run. I also suspect the bug has been fixed upstream between rc5 & rc6, which confused me for a while too.
I'm now bisecting to see if I can find out what (possibly) fixed the bug.
