There might be other linux 0.01 variants, I can't remember which one is the most stable. If that version doesn't work, then try others.
I tried to create a similar project and it is tough work, but the Linux 0.01 code itself is not that complicated. If I remember it ranged in size of about 15,000 lines of code. That was only the kernel.
