Preferences among distros is a personal choice.
Still some to choose from
1. Fedora Core 7
2. Ubuntu 7.04
3. Debian
5. Suse 10.x
6. Gentoo

Get a kernel from kernel.org .
compile it .
Boot into newly build kernel.
Write your modules , compiles them and run them.

Good luck
