Also, have a look at 'make cscope' and your $EDITORs capabilities with cscope-output. (Warning: cscope files are huge, like 1GB for me at the moment. For a start, I'd definately go for Linus'-tree. You may encounter things in distribution kernels which are uncommon in the vanilla kernel, what can be confusing.
