just to be clear, from what i read above, the kernel code can still
handle the older filesystem images.

p.s. the "mkinitrd" utility that ships with fedora these days
explicitly builds a cpio-format image, so i'm guessing that cpio is
becoming the initrd image format of choice. not to be confused with
the initramfs image, which is *always* a cpio format.
