I assume that it is creating the directory so that binary objects, created by 
the build, can be placed there rather than the x86 directory.

This may be to retain historical locations for x86_64 binaries or may be to 
ensure that there is no confusion as to whether the binaries produced are for 
32 or 64 bit x86 machines.
