This is a learning challenge -sorry, I cannot provide a magic recipe.

Here is how I tackle such situations:

- Start by writing down a list of your H/W knowledge "holes"
and begin working it one item at a time.
- Get some related documentation and start reading.
- Ask questions - here is not the good place but out there
you'll find lots of discussion groups related to H/W.
- If possible try/exercise the function you are learning.

Only sustained learning gets you good results - so invest time !

It is good to work on x86 or Mips but if you are not involved
directly with the H/W interface it may be difficult to try your
learning labs on it.

Hope this helps.

Good luck,
Stephan.
