My advice is to find songs you really like, get the charts and find out
what different things your favorite jazz players are doing to them and copy
like crazy... but... make your licks better to your ear, make them automatic
by repetition.

A great player has a "Bag of Licks" to choose from. Greats like Charlie
Parker knew every chord to the tunes they played, every note that worked in
those chords/changes and he played them whenever he wanted and people liked
it...That's why he was so great. Great players throw in melodies from other
songs that have the same changes.

The hard part is building your ear, playing what you hear in your head and
having to skill and confidence to pull it off and still enjoy what you're
doing.... if it's no fun, you'll quit.

In the old days, musicians developed new sounds and styles by jamming a lot
and sharing their ideas. John Lennon was the most curious person I ever met.
Great musicians learned because they were excited and curious.

I suggest a Jr. College for study. Don't forget the internet is a great
source for everything musical and you'll probably find all the answers there
for free.

I think you're brave by asking your questions and I'm sure if you remain
curious and keep learning (from as many sources as possible) and playing
with as many people as you can, you're gonna reach beyond your
expectations.... but you'll always need more knowledge. It's an addiction.

It's all about the ear. If I could figure out where Miles Davis got the
notes he played, I'd be a happy man.
