I spoke too soon; booting with "kgdboc=ttyS0,115200" does get my serial input recognized after entering kdb, but my USB keyboard input's still ignored, which I see now is by design. This machine doesn't have any PS/2 ports, so the conclusion's just that I have to use serial to interact.
