I don't know if you've used Unity yet, but in case you don't like it I
recommend XFCE. The only problem I'm having with 12.04 is that Gtk3
programs will randomly decide when I click in their window that I'm
dragging them with the mouse offset about half the screen width to the
left of the window. Somewhat annoying.

No I have not used Unity yet. Is there any possibility that I might like it?
I guess there's that possibility! I found some things sort of nice, but
overall I found it much slower to use.
Apparently Cinnamon is another option, from some other debian distro, or ubuntu
derivative...
Cinnamon is a fork of Gnome3 done by the folks at Linux Mint (which is
an ubuntu derivative). It gives you back the applications menu and task
bar (both gone from Unity and Gnome3), but has the nice features from
the newer systems such as a search function in the menu.
You can install it from a PPA on Ubuntu - I just have not done that yet.
It is easy to have several desktops installed and select the one you
want at login. I have LXDE and XFCE right now and may try Cinnamon
again. Cinnamon, LXDE or XFCE will all give you a usable desktop that
is similar to what you are used to. LXDE is the lightest and fastest,
then XFCE and then Cinnamon/Unity/Gnome3.
