Thanks Dick, The link you provided looks in the right direction... but I am still confused:
Is the script shown '*Example that loads a board, hides all values, shows all references' *run from independent of a running instance of kicad, or does the script require 'kicad with scripting support' (which I understand needs to be compiled from source and sounds too scary for me)?... where is the python module 'pcb new': the scripts refer to a python file pcbnew ( from pcbnew import *)? I cannot find it from browsing the source.
