Didn't notice that in fact where the same stuff! Anyway, another format couldn't hurt... it seem pretty harmless to integrate (since for pad there are dedicate functions...) and I don't see any revolution needed for that. Also the added interface needed (for example to 'set' the current layer and attributes and stuff) could be used for DXF too (to make true multilayer DXF, for example or annotate it, just an idea).
