Remember, you are only a newbie for a short time but will spend most of your time as an experienced user. You want the tool to be powerful yet easy enough to learn so that newbies don't give up before learning the tool.
You can do this with the ability to configure features so that you enable more powerful features as you gain experience but the trade off there is that any change requires testing a bazzillion different configurations. Not easy to do with all volunteers. There is also the issue that everyone has their own opinion as to what is useful and what is not. Case in point you mentioned that warp to center on zoom was "weird" and that nobody else does it. gEDA also does it and it is really useful feature. John Eaton
