A bug report and patch has been submitted to add a .gitignore file to the repo. I think it's a good idea to make life easier for our developers using git so I'm OK with committing the patch. Before I do so, I want to make sure there are no objections. Adding this patch does not mean we are moving to git any time soon so please refrain from the usual git fanfare that seems to happen every time git is mentioned.
