A+++ Always hated the environment variables because your typical electrical engineer/non power user would not know wtf they are. Anyone developing kicad is already above average.
File extension idea is good too. I suggest keeping the separate file filters in addition to an "all" filter if you go that route. Sometimes its faster to pick the right file that way in a sea of files. The wording on the page with "Review and confirm changes to the libraries" is weird, you are adding libraries no? Why are they "changes to the libraries" then?
