Hi Orson, It is useful for me when start a new project when there are no much "mechanical component placement constraints" so it helps to optimize the component placement to achieve the smaller board and component orientation.
Also as there is no intelligent component auto-placement, it helps me to populate the board answering questions like "where should I temporary place this component to start organizing the board?" It is helpful for example on decoupling capacitors..
