I would ask that the person who maintains that document provide some indication in the document (ie. a cover page) as to the version of the document or the date when it was last updated.
I have also been working on a side project that requires me to know the format of some of the KiCad files but I never know for sure if my copy of the doc is up to date with the PDF files I find online.
