I realize that others prefer it differently, but typically I read the first
email in a thread and then I know the context of all the following emails in
that thread. This is greatly helped by a complete and concise subject line.

If you are responding to a specific portion of an email, then it makes for
sense to extract that portion and include it above your response. I really
don't mind seeing extracts followed by answers, but what is annoying is
having to scroll through an entire email that I read only seconds earlier
just to get to an answer.

We may get more meaningful help if people do not have to worry about the
exact format of their replies. Sometimes a quick response doesn't justify
trimming and extracting and the previous email could be included at the
bottom for reference in case it is needed.

Not trying to be a pest, I simply want to get the most out of this group as
possible.
