The best trick I used to follow was:

First, by moving away a bit the item occupying the text area.
Next, moving the text in question to a rather empty surface.
Then returning back the item to its original position.
Finally I place the text where I like it to be once again.

But now, with the GREAT undo function, it became:
(1) I write the text on an empty area
(2) Copy and move the text anywhere I like
(3) in case of error I just undo the last step & start again from
step (2)

Note: when I need to write another text, I just edit the extra text
(the one I started with in the empty area) instead of creating a new
one. At the end I need to erase one text only (always in that empty
part).

IMHO, to solve this minor problem, the "priority" in selecting a
nearby item needs to be set according to the last mode(s) that the
user was working with. Perhaps this fearure will be implemented in
the next update :)
