It auto-updates for me. I'm using the Win32 version at release 10/21/07. When you did the initial page settings for the "root" sheet, did you check "export to other sheets"? I've entered each sheet into the main "root" sheet and let KiCad create the sub-sheet for me. In one case I replaced a sub-sheet with another schematic from another project, but each time the count was updated.
