@Marcus: I've been searching the group and found your thread regarding 
wrong include paths, however, I've downloaded the 20080714-r1160 source 
today, compiled and installed it on the same Gentoo system which I was 
using before, works charming so far, except:

@Martin: crashing the X-Server is ... a major bug. Doesn't happen on my 
system though, but having that said I currently don't get anything 
displayed in 3D view at all. I'll will focus on that a bit later during 
the design process.
