I made a really simple and stupid mistake. I must have been very tired. I am routing a CMS board for the first time and I was on the wrong layer, i.e. without any pads. So although I thought I was clicking on a pad, of course no net could be identified (in fact, NC unconnected pins were highlighted, which added to my confusion).
