I've just installed this on SUSE11.1 I used the CENTOS package.

I've been meaning to install on the linux box for some time so this
thread prompted me to do it :-)

Manual installation is dead easy.

The exact instructions are in install.txt on the ftp site.

Basically:

as root untar into usr/local (this creates a kicad folder and all the
directory tree.
go into /usr/local/kicad/bin
run a chmod on all the files this just adds some permissions to the files

That's it, all done

The same method should work on Debian

If you want to, you can copy the kicad.desktop to your own user desktop
that will give you a launch icon. It works for gnome as well.

I've just copied all my WinXP created boards across and everything works
just as well. I just had to add my own libs and mods as you would expect.
