Hi Damian,

I had the same issue: Had a copy of Protel (old version of AD) installed but
not being able to use it for commercial projects due to license issues.
Then I tried to buy 2nd-hand versions: It is not possible due to their
stringent license policy - except in a few countries where laws force them to
allow customers to sell of their license.
Then I considered to buy a new version but when I heard the price I could only
laugh! They aparently added some nice functions for programmable logic - but I
don't need that stuff and I am not willing to pay for it.
Finally I tried Kicad and - yes - it took some time to fully get into it and in
some perspectives it might not be as convenient and smooth as AD is. But after
all it is a nice package, easy to use yet very powerful. And it gives you
excellent value for money!
I might need to mention that I have been using around 5 different PCB CAD
packages over the last 15 years and there is no perfect one. Even the expensive
packages like PADS do have some issues - but you pay a good 5-digit
dollar-figure for it.

Cheers, Heiko
