Before creating the schematic and footprint yourself, try this KiCad library and module search engine:
http://per.launay.free.fr/kicad/kicad_php/composant.php I typed in LM556N and it found me libraries that have it. Click on the one you want and download and load in the KiCad libraries and you are set to go (there was no module or footprint for it though, but if you know what kind of package the component has, you can search that as well if KiCad's modules don't have it.
