Another interest of using zone and large ground plane is to slightly reduce
the amount of copper removed by the acid during the etching process, thus
extending the life of the etchant and the number of pcb you can produce with
a single gallon of chloride (or equivalent). This is a purely ecological
approach of the problem, but important. as the DIY pcb chain uses quite a
lot of pollutant agents (lead, copper, acid, a.s.o.)
