when a pin is defined it can be set to not show.
This is done typically with power pins on a chip. What is important is
the NAME, VCC, GND and so on.

If you have set eeschema NOT to show hidden pins then obviously it will
not, but when you place a power port with the same name, e.g. GND,
eeschema will automatically connect this to the hidden pins of the same
name. In other words you can draw your circuit without the power lines
thus making the circuit less cluttered.

If you have the show hidden pins selected, then you have to connect them
up manually.

In a small project with only one or two IC's it does not make much
difference which way you work, but with many components it makes life
easier.
