Hello Richard. > Thank you for everyones advice. It merely confirmed I wasn't doing > anything wrong.
I am looking now at the Windows Version Build 20090216-RC6. Of course, its behavior is different from the earlier version i described at my manual. KiCAD is a work in a very fast progress.......at home, i installed the February 2009 version of KiCAD to my new debian "lenny", but not tested it in the deep. > I uninstalled and reinstalled and still didn't fix it. So instead I > downloaded version 20080825c and installed tha instead and voila the > fields tab appeared. Which is the version, i described..... > For some reason the fields tab was missing from the options menu. > So I guess theres a bug in the latest windows version. > No, i searched and find the way to change Value and Name only at the Schematic editor EEschema itsself, not at the library editor. I was bewildered, too, but at last, it seems to be logicaly consistent. The device at the library as symbol, has No value nor Name, with the exeption of its own name as a symbol to seperate it from other symbols. At the Symbol library, let there be a symbol named "Resistor". You put it into a schematic, and all where you put it in, its got the Value "Resistor" as a makeshift name from the library name, and a "Reference" R?. This is because you wants to choose value and name very free. The Value can be everything from a small 0402 SMD device with some kilo ohms to a braking resitor from a railroad engine with some 0,01 Ohms and a wight of several tons. Also you can name the device by its "Reverence" very free, you can name the device by Letter and running number (like R7 or R208), or by its use (load resistor, braking resistor ec). You even can call it "bernd". :-) So Name and Value are only propertys used at the schematic, and not at the library, and consequently, you can change it only at the schematic editor. You can change "Name and Value" this by choosing the device you want to edit, click it right, choose from the box "edit device" and than "value" or reference", depending in what you want. Perhaps there will be even the possibility to choose only "edit" and work with a spreadsheet, but i didn't test this yet. Look at the pictures at the attachment. "BauteilWert-text.PNG2 will show you how to choose the edit boxes, "Bauteil-NameValue1-text.PNG" shows you "name" and value" before editing it, and "Bauteil-NameValue2-text.PNG" shows you "name" and value" after editing it.
