Create the zones as a Footprint / Module. Then place them to the Board. This is the way i create the first step of pdf-previews for my modules. Placing the modules onto a board and print them out to pdf. So this is proven. :-) Despite graphical lines and circles are forbidden on copper at PCBnew, you can do this at the module-editor. You will need this funktion also for odd shaped components. You can do this all without a Schematic (this is the way i create the first step of pdf-previews for my modules), but when you want to tie them to a schematic, so make a schematic and connect the symbols of the schematic with CVpcb to the modules.
