when looking at Alt-F3 it states

However if I Alt-F2 while it is running I can run the same command
successfully.

You probably have the same issue with the USB as I had with the CD. It
gets ejected before the file is copied. If so, you'll need to patch
stage2.img to stop this behavior. I have a x86_64 stage2 patched if you
want to email me off-list, or I can email you instructions on how to
patch it as well.
