I'm still struggling with one thing: to turn off that "klunk" sound when
GDM starts. the lines below directly in the %post section all did not work.

/desktop/gnome/sound/event_sounds false

sudo -u gdm gconftool-2 --direct

/desktop/gnome/sound/event_sounds false


The gdm user doesn't have write access to /etc/gconf, you can probably leave off the --direct --config-source...

sudo -u gdm gconftool-2 -s -t bool /desktop/gnome/sound/event_sounds false

should do it.
