"Ho, watch ye self with tha' stuff!!!!! Ye 'rying to blow us in'o a million pieces!!", said Byron Stady, the munitions officer aboard the Lady Jean. "If ye jostle it too 'uch, there'll be nothing left o' ye to put 'ack together; nothing left of any o' ye to even find! So be 'areful!" The pirates' lair was on a small island that was shaped sort of like a bumpy triangle, and at the three corners there were huge mountainous peaks that were the remnants of old volcanoes. The old volcanoes were completely hollow on the inside and two of the three had gaping holes at there base right along the edge of the sea, the holes were set low enough into the water and were large enough that they made the perfect port and hideaway. On the inside of the volcanoes were lava tubes that had long been drained out and were now used as tunnels between different points on the island. In the center of the island was a small open area or wold that could only be reached from lava tubes and was impossible to see from the surrounding sea. This was where the main town or city of the pirates had been built; it was dingy and had a black soot covering every building, but it was constructed by master craftsmen and the very sight of the stronghold that sat directly in the center of the city would raise the little hairs on the back of the neck straight up and at attention. The minerals that were contained in the old volcanoes was what gave the pirates the fighting strength they had; it was plentiful in sulfur and charcoal which they used to make a black powder for firing their great guns on their ships. There was also massive amounts of iron ore that made up the guns and even some of the ships they sailed around in. The same iron ore that was used to make weapons and ships was also used as a homing beacon of sorts to the island. The magnetic qualities of the entire island would draw a compass needle within four hundred to five hundred miles, making it possible for the pirates to venture far away from their island and still be able to find their way back. The pirates wouldn't be able to survive without that ability though, the same minerals that made black powder also made it impossible to grow any plant life on the island; and with no plant life the also couldn't raise any animals. That was why they were pirates, they sought out other islands and attacked and raided them mostly for their crops and other food sources. Over looking the Lady Jean from a small ledge on the inside of the volcanoe wall, Byron Stady barked out the rest of his orders for loading the ship and headed into town to wait for the order to dispatch the ship and head to sea. (Okay, there's my addition, is anyone else going to join in; this is kind of fun!!!)
