2. About your second question - KIM is exactly a software for
automatic ontology population and open-domain semantic annotation of
unstructured and semi-structured data sources.

We also call it a "platform" because it can be customized to a pretty
good degree. In simple terms - KIM annotates the documents the user
have supplied and then KIM returns the result in the form of
annotated documents. You can do that programmatically or by using the
annotation tool in the \kim\bin folder.
KIM also provides much more:
* Indexing and retrieval
* Query and exploration of formal knowledge
* Co-occurrence tracking and ranking of entities
* Entity popularity timelines analysis
