............
For various reasons (perhaps some of which I discuss below) Wietse decided
to
offer the world another choice in an MTA, and developed VMailer, which was
released under the name Postfix. It shares many of qmail's strengths, and
has
a few more besides.

But to a first approximation, I'd say that qmail and Postfix are the best
MTAs
out there, and I'd recommend _anybody_ use one or the other of those, and
the
question of which one to use I'd feel a lot less strongly about. Give each
one
a quick peek --- download and unpack the sources and skim the installation
instructions --- and go with whichever one looks like it'd taste better to
you. If you can afford the time, it would be a valuable exercise to set up
working configurations of each one and let 'em go for a while, see which one
you look forward to adjusting to fit changing circumstances and which one
you
come to dread. It _Really_ is a matter of taste more than anything else, for
most people.

Both qmail and Postfix are highly secure, highly reliable, and
breathtakingly
fast MTAs designed and written by people with good reputations for reliable,
secure code. So since qmail was well established before Postfix was born,
why
Postfix? Why come along with a second choice? [warning: here's where I start
getting more partisan]

qmail has a couple of features to it that drive some folks away. Perfect
drop-in compatibility with sendmail has never been one of the top goals; for
the most part, features are examined with the point of view, "would the user
be better off if we gave them this compatability feature, or if they
switched
to doing things in a fundamentally better way?". This was particularly
strong
early on; it has become less of an issue lately, since qmail's wonderful
flexibility has allowed add-ons to address many of the initially-painful
limitations (e.g. sendmail-compatible .forward and aliases handling). By
contrast, Postfix has been intended from the start as a sendmail-killer; the
plan has always been that as many people as possible should be able to
effortlessly replace sendmail with Postfix and not have to change anything
else about how they do business.

Another worry was licensing; djb's license terms for qmail were a bit
stricter
than some folks like. They've never prevented anyone who wants to from
downloading the sources from djb and using them to route their email, but
some
sorts of redistribution are restricted (note: redistributing unmodified
sources and patches that apply to them are _not_ restricted, and never
were).
In some settings this may have been an issue. Postfix originally came out
with
a license with an even graver worry: the first cut of an "Open" sort of
license from IBM included a clause that seemed to allow IBM to retract the
right to use or redistribute the software at their whim. This has since been
addressed, and as far as I know IBM's current license is accepted by the
Open
Source Initiative.

Then there's qmail's configuration, another topic on which people disagree;
while it's certainly simpler than sendmail.cf files, it's not to everyone's
taste. qmail is configured with a lot of little files in simple formats.
This
turns out to be particularly nice as a program API, but some people find the
abundance of separate places where you do configuration to be a barrier.
Postfix by contrast gathers nearly all the configuration into one text file,
well-commented, with name=value assignments in it. Some folks find this
easier
to approach.

And then there are personality issues. I've tried to avoid ad-hominem
remarks
in this note, so I won't go into any more detail, but I've heard that some
people have based their choice between qmail and Postfix on the
personalities
of the authors.
