back when I was working with cisco hardware, i remember that:
1. you can connect to it via serial port. this is so that
there's a physical way to get to the cisco if you mess it
up some way and can't get to it across the network.
figure out how to do that.
2. you can save the configuration and reload the configuration.
figure out how to save the config to an external computer
(e.g., the same laptop you use to connect to the serial port).
then read up on how to restore the config if something goes
terribly wrogn.
generally, if you've got both of those down, you'll be fine. siempre,
you want to be conservative anyway. but if something goes terribly
wrogn you can get yourself out of the hole as long as you can restore
the config from the remote.
