You can try hardwyrd's solution (posted a long time ago IIRC):

1. do a ctrl-alt-f1 to get you a new shell without X
2. backup your current /etc/X11/xorg.conf
3. sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop
4. vi /etc/X11/xorg.conf and in the device section, add the line:
Option "IgnoreEDID" "TRUE". For reference see example below:

Section "Device"
        Identifier      "NVIDIA Corporation NV44 [GeForce 6200
TurboCache]"
        Driver          "nv"
        BusID           "PCI:1:0:0"
        Option          "IgnoreEDID" "TRUE"
EndSection

5. put in 1024x768 as suggested by the others here in the screen
section, display subsection
6. save xorg.conf
7. sudo /etc/init.d/gdm start

Your desired resolution should be available.
