you'll want to test that out though. some of those 500Mhz PIII
motherboards have BIOSes that don't take drives larger than 40G (i even
saw some that wouldn't take 40G drives).
if you can, check your bios version and see if it supports 80G drives.
if it doesn't, see if there's a flash upgrade that will let it support
80G drives.

if it's that sensitive, i would become suspicious of the motherboard or
memory. might be time to run memcheck for a day or two.
