Actually this technology was already developed. An israeli company, and recently a japanese company, developed a USB-connected device that contains "scent essence cartridges" that will emit mimicked scents from the original product (perfume, etc) that is downloaded over the net. To generate the odor, XML was initially used to contain the information of the actual composition of the product. A driver is required to install into the host system which will then parse the info from the XML file then the odor is generated by the USB device.
Sorry forgot the names of the companies. These were featured on Discovery Channel I think last year and I dunno what happened to the companies. However recent derivatives of such a device can be found at: http://www.i4u.com/article3106.html http://digital-lifestyles.info/2004/02/20/telewest-float-surf-sniff-smell-generator/ http://digital-lifestyles.info/2006/09/05/smell-the-radio-with-usb-aroma-geur Disclaimer: I am not endorsing products in the website links whatsoever.
