Testing links if it's dead or not is a wonderful idea. It's like SEO's checking linkbacks system but I don't know if it really affects bandwidth. There could be a lot of reasons if the link is dead. Maybe it's not totally dead. A lot of factors to be considered.. site updates, server down, or you're connection just lost.. just like what happened to me a while ago.
