Hmm, never did mod it, though I've lapped the base to mirror finish to
further lower my processor temperatures..

Thanks for sharing Zhadd :). Yeah that's what I thought so too eversince I
first saw XPC utilizing heatpipe tech. Have you tried modding your own
heatpipe? I think I'll shelve my brass cores for watercooling too :).

Hmm, recent alienware cases rely mostly on water cooling, only the older
versions are fan cooled, I have only one fan controller, modded to control
the speeds of all the 80mm fan in my case, also a 450w non-generic PSU is
already more than enough for today's systems, even with all those fans and
bling-blings installed, hehehe...

I'm looking at different case designs online that I can learn from that will
provide better heat management and ehat discharge efficiency. I envy those
Area-51 cases but I'm not sure how efficient they are since I dont have an
actual rig :). Surely having lots of fans will help. But you mentioned also
that more fans will require additional controller card plus PSU
considerations.

Actually the Opteron is readily available for the desktop, there are aAM2
variants readily available from my manila supplier, but availability of s939
Opterons are now scarce, for both single core and dual core variants, I
personally like the Opterons, since they can reach very high overclocks even
on stock cooling due to their low temperatures.

I was hoping AMD will release the Opteron (or similar spec) for the low-end
desktop. When I first saw Sun Microsystem's Sun Ultra 20, it was a hell of
a machine. Ultra quite, very cool. I touched the cooling fan assembly (heat
sink and all), and I did not feel any heat at all despite it running for
almost 10 hours non-stop

for 30k or less, if its only for the CPU, you could go quite far.. this
specs was something I gave to a close friend of mine about a week ago.

AMD A64 X2 3600+ AM2
Epox MF4-J Nforce4
1GB Geil DDR2-800
Palit GeForce 7600GS Sonic DDR3
Duke Duo Casing
Western Digital SATA2 160Gb
Task 450w PSU
28k est.

or Cheap SLi

AMD Sempron64 2800+
Epox 8NPA-SLI
1GB PQI DDR400 with heatspreader
2x Palit GeForce 7300GT Sonic DDR3
Duke Duo Casing
Western Digital SATA2 160Gb
Task 450w PSU
27k est.

All setup can be OCed to desired "attainable levels" for free...

My budget's pretty modest. ranging from 25K to 30K tops.

hehehe, none in particular..

Any particular paints you use if ever?
