long time no see hear from you sir. hehe. are you referring to Godeg
Yebron sir? :)

i guess there were/are really a lot of group projects who were/are
developing mobile database programming. hehe. our approach was embedding WML
tags in PHP. normally, PHP won't read the WML tags and would just display
errors and also your browsers won't display anything in the WML tags(except
for Opera and FF who has an add-on for reading .wml file extensions). you
also need to add some AddTypes in Apache's .conf and add the necessary MIME
Types and include a content-type in the header of your PHP code. PHP does
all the dynamic stuff and WML does the display in the WAP browser of the
mobile device. we used ADOdb also since it supports almost all databases (
http://phplens.com/lens/adodb/docs-adodb.htm#drivers) so database query
standards is no longer an issue. you just need to change one paramater in
the function that connects to the database.

our senior year project was a success. except for minor revisions
regarding error-handling, escape characters, and security of our project
(lack of time? hehe). mobile programming is really hard, especially if you
are working on WAP browsers. there are a lot of issues involved like
standards of WAP browsers, screen sizes, memory capability of the mobile
phones, etc. the project was tested only on a Nokia Series 40 Emulator.
funny thing was my PC had an over kill. the emulator, the wap gateway server
simulator, the application, and the dbms were all installed in the PC. lack
of resources and equipment.that is why mobile programming is really
difficult to practice.*sigh*

going back to the topic, since he mentioned java, gsm modem, mysql, and
suse 10.2. in my own understanding..

(any mobile phone -> gsm modem -> application -> dbms )

so customer will text his/her message then it will pass thru the gsm modem
and then the application(using java) is being used to record it to the
dbms(mysql).

jarlow, am i right? :)

P.S.
btw, WML is already being replaced by XHTML Mobile Profile (MP). the
interesting part here is that you can design your application using Wireless
Cascading Style Sheets or WCSS. similar syntax though but very strict since
it's XML-based. :)
