It really depends on what type of data you are sending across the wire. The
advantage of using Web Services is you can serialize your objects across
platforms. I haven't done any sockets programming in five years and I doubt
it supports serialization. Take advantage of object serialization if you
really need it specially if you are dealing with good OOP languages such as
C# and Java.
If you are just playing with small type of data then go with sockets. C# and
Java has good network socket functions too.
