Honestly, murag nakalimot nako about wildcards in ldap searches/queries.

Pero sa aha ni gigamit? TOMCAT authentication? Email?
Naa man gud uban apps na wala naka full support sa RFC's regarding
LDAP.  Dunno gyud kung standard ba to gamit namo kay later on nag reveal
man ang client namo na lahi diay na variant sa LDAP ilang gamit. 

supposedly it's possible to use the ff syntax: 
<attr>=<pattern>

ex:
firstname=john*
