What addon are you trying to edit? What's the error message?
I only edit the maxVersion property. Also, make you sure you are editing it
in-place, i.e. you have the edited .rdf inside the XPI file.
Below is a snippet from the install.rdf file for the YSlow! addon (which
does not have a FF 3.5 version yet).
