Have you tried Sun VirtualBox? There's an option to enable 3D acceleration and you can use up to 128MB.
I'm using Ubuntu inside Sun VirtualBox on top of Windows Vista. That way, I can play games or do Windows stuff and at the same time do development or connect to servers inside virtualbox without even having to reboot. File sharing is also as easy as 1-2-3 and the seamless mode allows you to get rid of the host-key and the mouse cursor being trapped in the virtual machine. I don't think it's an issue of overhead and performance issues but rather on maximizing our resources, if you have a lot.
